Cybelle L

“Kidney disease has had a huge impact on my life, financially, socially and emotionally.”

Cybelle L. has had to face a lot of challenges in the 20 years since she was diagnosed with nephritis (inflammation of kidneys) when she was 30 years old.  She has had to deal with numerous health challenges and treatments, including a bone marrow transplant, peritoneal dialysis and a kidney transplant. The physical and emotional toll has been heavy, but bearable thanks to the support of her husband, Paul.

“I met Paul when I was 37, and he has been there for me through all the rough times. Even through dialysis and my transplant, he’s been by my side,” says Cybelle.

Also on her side was her healthcare team at Lakeridge Health where she received pre-dialysis care for 10 years and dialysis care for another 9. “Those people were like my family. Talking to my nurse was like talking to a sister. Knowing that I could call on them at any time was so important to me.”

That kind of support is vital for anyone dealing with a chronic illness like CKD and living with the emotional rollercoaster of waiting for a kidney transplant. “I never knew where I was on the waiting list. I wasn’t given much information; I didn’t even know who to ask. It’s very tough to live your life while waiting for a phone call.”

The call finally came in June 2014, and Cybelle received a kidney transplant after 8 years on the waiting list. Although she continues to face some health issues, she maintains a positive attitude. “That’s so important when it comes to your health. If you have a negative outlook, nothing will work for you.”
